NASHVILLE - Gov. Bill Haslam has signed legislation that allows Tennessee's handgun-carry permit holders to store firearms in vehicles on most private and public parking lots.

The law takes effect July 1.

House members gave final approval to the measure last month on a 72-22 vote. Senators approved it previously, voting 28-5 in favor.

Haslam's signing of the legislation comes amid continuing questions about the law's impact on employers' ability to discipline workers who store weapons in their vehicle.

The Associated Press has reported that Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey and four other GOP co-sponsors on Thursday submitted a letter for inclusion in the Senate Journal elaborating on their legislative intent. In the House, sponsors said the law would allow employers to discipline and even fire workers who violate no-gun policies.
