Chattanooga police have released the identity of the cyclist killed today during the 3 State, 3 Mountain Challenge ride.

The victim was Antonio Jose Desousa Ribeiro, 49, of Jacksonville, Fla., police spokesman Nathan Hartwig said late Saturday.

He said witness statements and evidence at the scene show that Ribeiro was riding downhill in a curve in the 400 block of Ochs Highway. At the same time, a car was headed up Ochs Highway approaching the same curve. Ribeiro lost control of the bike and went into the path of the oncoming car.

The investigation is still ongoing, Hartwig said.
