The Chattanooga Area Food Bank soon will offer healthier meal options to the area's low-income seniors, according to a news release.

The Food Bank will receive a $40,000 grant to start a Senior Grocery Program from Feeding America.

Feeding America announced on Tuesday that it received a $500,000 grant from the AARP Foundation that will be divided among 10 member food banks to start or expand a Senior Grocery Program.

The program offers healthy food options, including fresh produce, to low-income seniors who are at risk of hunger. The Senior Grocery Program helps supplement the nonperishable foods many seniors receive from the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which serves people older than 60.

Feeding America provided more than 35 million meals through its Senior Grocery Program in fiscal 2011.

AARP Tennessee volunteers and staff will present the $40,000 check to Chattanooga Food Bank officials on May 31.
