Dustin Shawn HighfieldThree men were arrested this weekend on various drug charges and a stolen backhoe was recovered in DeKalb County, Ala., the sheriff said in a news release.
Sheriff Jimmy Harris said deputies arrested Dustin Shawn Highfield, 32, of Collinsville, during a traffic stop near Sylvania at 1:05 a.m. Saturday.
Highfield was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana 2nd, driving under the influence and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
David William Davis, 24, of Stevenson, was arrested after a traffic stop near Fyffe just after midnight Friday, the sheriff said. Davis was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Also, Christopher Dwayne Chandler, 37, of Birmingham, was arrested after a 911 call to a home about a disturbance Saturday night. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana 2nd, illegal possession of prescription drugs and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
All three suspects are in the DeKalb County Detention Center awaiting bonds, Harris said.
In an unrelated incident, a resident found a 1998 Caterpillar backhoe near a wood line. The resident called the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office and a deputy went to the scene.
Harris said the backhoe was identified as having been stolen from the Republic Services Landfill near Lebanon in April. The windows were broken in the cab, but the unit was operational and returned to the owners, he said.
The theft case remains open, the sheriff said.
