EPB raising rates for television customers

EPB Fiber Optics is raising rates for its Fi TV bundles as of July 1.

Monthly bills will rise between $1 and $6, depending on the customer's TV package, spokesman John Pless said in a news release Wednesday night.

He said it was the first price increase since Fi TV was launched in 2009.

The release said that nearly all of the television networks supplying programming for Fi TV have raised prices over the last four years, and Fi TV has broadened its offerings to include 280 standard-and 118 high-definition channels. Those additions represent cost increases to EPB of more than 34 percent, he said.

"I wish we could hold the line on Fi TV prices, because the last thing we want is an increase for our customers," EPB president and CEO Harold DePriest said in the release. "Unfortunately, we are asking for an increase in pricing to help offset the rising cost of programming."

Prices won't change for high-definition service, premium channels, the sports package, additional equipment and repair services. Customers will continue getting their remote and first set-top box for Fi TV Gold at no charge. Fi-Speed Internet and Fi-Phone prices will remain at current levels.
