Grand jury indicts Alabama woman in four-month-old son's death

ANNISTON, Ala. - A Calhoun County grand jury has indicted an Anniston woman on charges linked to her son's heat-related death.

Investigators have said 35-year-old Katherine Papke left her four-month-old son in a parked car in early-August.

Papke's attorney, Jim Sturdivant, has said his client - who is a member of the Alabama National Guard - went to drop off her two daughters at school and worked through lunch before realizing she never dropped her son, Bennett, off at daycare.

Papke was charged with manslaughter and leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, but the second charge was dismissed.

WBRC-TV reports Papke's arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 19. Sturdivant told the station that Papke is still devastated by her son's death.
