Trial date set for former Auburn officer's suit

AUBURN, Ala. - A federal judge has set a trial date next fall for a lawsuit filed by a former Auburn police officer who claims he was fired after complaining about what he considered a ticket quota.

U.S. District Judge Harold Albritton scheduled trial Sept. 29 in Opelika on the suit filed by former officer Justin Hanners.

Hanners claims he was demoted and then fired in early 2013 for complaining about a quota. Auburn city officials say there was no quota.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports that Hanners recorded a supervisor explaining that officers should have 100 contacts with the public each month, with 40 being traffic warnings and the others being traffic citations, non-traffic citations, field interviews and arrests.

City officials said the supervisor was acting on his own.
