CROWN POINT, Ind. - Authorities in northwestern Indiana are trying to find a home for two emaciated horses found abandoned near a state fish and wildlife area.
"They were extremely emaciated," community liaison Yvette Scott of the Lake County Animal Adoption and Control Center told the Post-Tribune for a report Tuesday
A hunter found the female and gelding Nov. 3 near LaSalle State Fish and Wildlife Area in southern Lake County, Scott said. A vehicle hauling a horse trailer sped off before the hunter could get close enough to get a license plate number.
The hunter called police and, because other hunters were in the area, he stayed with the horses to keep them from wandering off until animal control arrived, Scott said.
The Lake County Sheriff's Horse Posse Unit is housing the animals and getting them necessary veterinary care.
Donations already have come in to help care for the horses, but more are needed, Scott said. Animal Control is seeking funds for the veterinary care, halters of various sizes, food, wormer, brushes, buckets, feed scoops and hay bags.
