MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A police officer in Montgomery has resigned after an Internet video surfaced showing him racing a department motorcycle, Police Chief Kevin Murphy said.
The officer, whose name was not released, may also face charges for traffic violations and drag racing.
"For the very thing that we are out here enforcing the law, for an officer to cross that line and violate it, there's no excuse," Murphy told WSFA-TV. "I will not tolerate it and he is no longer wearing the badge."
Montgomery resident Lawrence Lee Spillers recorded the video Sunday with a camera attached to his motorcycle helmet. While stopped at a red light, Spillers challenged the officer to a race.
"I got turbo," the officer replied, according to the video.
When the light turned green, both motorcyclists started racing.
Spillers said he thinks the officer was just having fun.
"I don't think he should be charged with anything, and I don't think he should have lost his job," he said.
