Jury selection ending third week in Georgia murder case

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Attorneys in the death penalty case of a coastal Georgia man charged with beating his father and seven others to death are nearly ready to select a jury.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys for Guy Heinze Jr. have spent the past three weeks questioning hundreds of potential jurors. They continued working today trying to narrow the jury pool down to 70 qualified panelists from which they can pick a final jury when the trial starts Oct. 15.

Glynn County Superior Court Clerk Lola Jamsky said 65 people had been qualified to serve as jurors by Friday afternoon.

Authorities allege Heinze single-handedly beat his father and seven members of an extended family to death in the mobile home they all shared on Aug. 29, 2009. Heinze has pleaded not guilty.
