Police say they had to shoot, kill man in Waycross, Ga.

WAYCROSS, Ga. - Waycross police say they had no choice but to shoot and kill a man in the south Georgia city.

Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner said the officers had to protect themselves when they shot 43-year-old Jack Lamar Roberson of Waycross on Friday afternoon.

The Waycross Journal-Herald reports that the shooting happened after two officers responded to a mobile home in the city about 250 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Tanner said that Roberson refused to drop two weapons he brandished and advanced on them with one weapon raised. The chief declined to say what the weapons were or answer questions following a Monday news conference.

Roberson's relatives disputed that account, telling the Florida Times-Union that he was unarmed when he was shot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the case.
