Ronnie Dolberry can return to work after the 30 days are up, Scottsboro Mayor Melton Potter said.
"It's 30 days without pay and the suspension started yesterday; no pay, no cellphone, no vehicle," Potter said Tuesday. "The violation was administrative [in nature], having to do with day-to-day operations."
Potter said there were no criminal elements involved in the suspension, but he would not elaborate further.
Dolberry could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Dolberry has worked for the city for more than five years, officials said. He was self-employed in the local construction industry until January 2008 when he was appointed to the superintendent post.
Scottsboro City Councilwoman Carol McCrary serves on the council's Street Department Committee. McCrary said Tuesday that she agreed with the suspension "due to the circumstances" and that there were few options.
"Mr. Dolberry has done a good job and he's been a great employee," McCrary said.
Until Dolberry returns to work, street department foreman Wayne Moore will serve in his place, she said.
"The department is running smoothly, business as usual, no changes or interruptions," she said.
As a department head, Dolberry cannot appeal his suspension, officials said.
Barring changes to conditions of his suspension, Dolberry will be able to return to work Nov. 6.
