Museum of Aviation in central Georgia to shut down amid budget battle

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. - The impasse over the federal budget has shut down the Museum of Aviation at Robins Air Force Base in central Georgia.

Military officials said all museums operated by the Department of Defense were ordered closed Thursday.

Col. Chris Hill, the installation commander at Robins Air Force Base, said employees at the museum will still report to work, but the facility will be closed.

Museum Director Ken Emery said in a statement that while the museum won't be open to the public, it will continue its mission through planning, restoration and development of future exhibits and programs.

The Telegraph of Macon reports that the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins attracts more than 450,000 visitors a year.

The museum's exhibits tell the story of the U.S. Air Force.
