NASHVILLE - U.S. Senate hopeful Joe Carr today urged his GOP primary opponent Sen. Lamar Alexander not to "sell us out" amid reports that Alexander participated in discussions with top Democrats over the weekend to resolve the two-week-old federal budget impasse and avoid an historic U.S. Treasury default.
"Senator Alexander is running as a 'Conservative Problem Solver,'" said Carr, a Tea Party leadership favorite in the GOP's 2014 Senate primary. "Now it is time for him to solve the government shutdown with a conservative solution that stops the disastrous implementation of ObamaCare and seriously addresses our federal government's spending problem.
"After Tennesseans have already endured two weeks of the government shutdown, now is no time to sell us out for a deal President Obama wanted on day one," Carr said.
Carr cited various news accounts. CBS News reported that Alexander and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., met with Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. The Wall Street Journal, Carr said, reported that Reid said Alexander called him to initiate talks.
