One and done.
In a contest of two Alabama country singers, Fort Payne's Justin Chain lost to Jasper, Ala.'s Shelbie Z in his first battle round on Monday night's episode of "The Voice."
But before he left, Chain had the once-in-a-lifetime chance to be mentored by Cher as well as learn from his country superstar judge, Blake Shelton.
The two country singers were the first battle pair Shelton put onstage, choosing Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson's No. 1 duet, "Don't You Wanna Stay" for them to perform. Shelton said he considered both of the singers "outlaw country," so he wanted to see what they could do with a love song.
In battle rounds, each judge pits two singers from his team to perform together. After hearing them, that judge chooses one to stay, the other goes home unless saved by another judge in a move called "the steal."
Chain's pitch was better than Z's, but her voice was stronger, prompting Cher to ask Chain in rehearsals "Do you have any power you're not using? Find it and use it."
After the two Alabamans performed, each judge critiqued the duo, then named their winners, but only Shelton's choice counted toward elimination. Judges Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green chose Shelbie Z; judge Adam Levine went with Chain.
Shelton praised the pair's chemistry, but ultimately gave the win to Shelbie Z.
