Official says Florence, Ala., outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease no reason to change activities

FLORENCE, Ala. - A state health official say there is no need for the public to alter its daily activities after an outbreak of Legionnaire's disease in Florence.

Assistant State Health Officer Karen Landers made the comment Tuesday after positive cultures for Legionella bacteria were found at two cooling towers at Regency Square Mall and one cooling tower at the Southwire manufacturing plant in Florence. She said the cooling towers have been turned off and the public can continue routine activities, including shopping.

Mall spokesman James Hull said the towers have been sterilized and will be retested before being reactivated.

Health officials also reduced the number of confirmed cases of Legionnaire's disease in the Florence outbreak from 15 to 14. A spokesman said one person who became ill had not been to Florence.
