COLUMBUS, Ga. - Northwest Georgia teams went 6-0 in the opening round of the GHSA Softball Championships Thursday. Each of the teams is playing a second-round game tonight at the Columbus Softball Complex.
In Class AAAA, Heritage used Lauren Lawson's three-hit shutout pitching to get past Perry, 2-0, and Northwest Whitfield downed Wayne County, 3-1, as pitcher BriLeigh Baggett had a two-hitter and also contributed a two-runs ingle in the fourth inning.
In Class AAA, Ringgold won a sloppy 7-4 game over Rockmart, scoring four runs on passed balls in the spacious stadium. Abbey McKinney earned the pitching win with 6 2/3 innings of relief and went 3-for-4 at the plate.
In Class AA, Calhoun scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to edge Berrien County, 2-1; and Dade County rapped out 12 hits - four from Ali Birchfield - to rout Jeff-Davis, 12-0, in five innings.
In Class A, Gordon Lee defeated Commerce 8-0 as pitcher Emily Armour had a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and drove in two runs.
