Gov. Bill Haslam this morning announced that the city of Athens will receive $170,446 from the Safe Routes to School program for kindergarten through eighth grade.
The city will use the money for sidewalks, crosswalks, signage and pavement markings for the Ingleside Elementary school zone area, according to a news release.
Safe Routes to School is administered through the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Altogether, the governor and Transportation Commissioner John Schroer announced more than $2.1 million in grants to 15 communities.
The city of Tullahoma was awarded $167,436 for sidewalks, crosswalks and signage in the East Lincoln Elementary School area and for educating students on the benefits of walking and biking.
The city of Winchester got $90,324 for crosswalks and signs around Clark Memorial Elementary and for walking/biking education.
