A man is dead after a run-in with a Marion County sheriff's deputy early Saturday morning, according to Marion County Sheriff Ronnie "Bo" Burnett.
Burnett said the sheriff's office received a call at 6:19 a.m. CDT Saturday that a man was sleeping on a Jasper resident's porch on Lock and Dam Road, near Nickajack Lake.
A Marion County deputy was headed to the scene when he heard a gunshot, Burnett said. He said someone at the house fired a "warning shot," but he wouldn't identify that person.
As the deputy was arriving, the intruder took off on foot.
Burnett said the man fled into nearby woods, and the Marion County deputy followed him. The sheriff said the man pointed a firearm at the deputy. Burnett said other deputies were headed that way but had not yet arrived.
The sheriff said the deputy told the man "several, several times" to lower the weapon, but the man didn't comply and the deputy shot him fatally.
Burnett said the deputy has been pulled from active duty, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
Residents on Lock and Dam Road near the shooting scene said Saturday evening they didn't see or hear anything Saturday morning.
"I didn't know anything about it for four or five hours this morning," neighbor John Wallace said.
TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said the man's name will be released after the medical examiner identifies him and notifies his next of kin.
