4 officers sickened after busting Alabama meth lab

PELHAM, Ala. - Pelham police say four officers who became sick after busting a suspected meth lab have been treated and released from a local hospital.

Police Lt. David Rushton says officers were ordered to pick up a juvenile from a motel room Monday evening and began smelling fumes wafting from the bathroom when they arrived.

Authorities say officers opened the door and discovered an active meth lab. Police left the room and began evacuating nearby rooms in the motel.

Police say a hazmat crew helped decontaminate the officers and the occupants of the motel room, who have not been identified.

Authorities say a police dog that came into contact with the fumes was also held for observation.

The Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force dismantled the lab and is investigating.
