COLUMBUS, Ga. - City officials in Columbus have approved spending $1.3 million to stabilize two sections of the Chattahoochee River's banks that collapsed along the city's whitewater course.
The new whitewater rafting course opened earlier this year on the river, which separates Columbus from Phenix City, Ala.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the Columbus City Council approved the money at a meeting on Tuesday.
Deputy City Manager David Arrington told councilors that a section that collapsed in March behind Chase Apartments has been stabilized temporarily but needs permanent stabilization work. At another section north of that site, about 600 feet of bank has collapsed, threatening the Chattahoochee RiverWalk in that section.
Arrington said record rainfall this year is likely a factor, and riverbank failures are a fact of life along the Chattahoochee.
