Suspect shot after chase following Cumberland County investigation of home burglary

An investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department of a burglary at a home in the Claysville area of Cumberland County on Wednesday ended in a suspect trying to evade officers in a high-speed chase and then being shot.

A news release from the sheriff's office said the investigation at the house led to the arrest of Michael Shawn Walker, 26.

But officers soon noticed a Toyota pickup next to the house leaving quickly and then a traffic stop led to the detention of Victoria Rose Gaw, 19, described as Walker's alleged girlfriend.

Then Gaw managed to escape the scene in a patrol vehicle with officers in pursuit.

The release said the pursuit ended on Taylors Chapel Road where Gaw allegedly attempted to run over to Cumberland County deputies. One of them shot at the vehicle, hitting Gaw, who was then taken to the University of Tennessee hospital where she is in stable condition.

Officials said Walker will be charged for aggravated burglary, theft of property and outstanding arrest warrants, the release said, while Gaw has been charged with two counts of attempted second degree murder, felony reckless endangerment and theft over $10,000. Gaw will also be facing aggravated burglary and theft charges.

The officer is on paid administrative leave pending the investigation., the release said
