Chattanooga-based Chattem reintroduces Rolaids

Chattanooga-based Chattem today reintroduced antacid Rolaids back to American shelves after nearly three years.

Chattem, the U.S. consumer health care arm of French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi, said that Rolaids will be sold in traditional tablets and there is also a new liquid form as well. A new "Ultra Strength" version also is available.

Former Rolaids owner Johnson & Johnson recalled the antacids in the United States in December 2010 because wood and metal particles were potentially introduced into the products during the manufacturing process at an outside supplier.

Chattem had said in January that it planned to relaunch Rolaids after buying the antacid for an undisclosed amount.

"For the last few years there has been a significant gap in the over-the-counter antacid marketplace here in the U.S.," said Zan Guerry, Chattem's chief executive. "Starting today, the millions of people who suffer from frequent heartburn and acid indigestion can once again turn to Rolaids to help relieve their symptoms."
