Chattanooga officials are asking residents whether the city has done a good job spending $3 million in grant funding over the past year to address housing, infrastructure, economic development and public service needs.
"The city has to take those comments into consideration in regard to whether there is need to adjust the manner in which we're spending the funds," said Sandra Gober, manager of Chattanooga's Office of Economic and Community Development.
Former Boynton Terrace Apartments resident council president Joe Clark said he plans to attend.
"I'm going. I'd like to know who is head of it and how the money is spent," he said.
Clark said he is concerned that more people with mental health issues are being moved into high-rise apartments for seniors on the Westside. He said no one is making sure they take their medications and get the help they need.
The report details spending in several areas:
• $469,501 to Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise to provide mortgages for first-time home buyers living in public housing.
• $310,000 to Chattanooga Parks and Recreation to create green space and a recreation area.
• $468,000 to the Department of Neighborhood Services to improve streets, sidewalks and lighting in low- to moderate-income areas and at the HOPE VI site.
"Each year we report on how well we've done on addressing the goals," said Gober.
The public may submit comments and suggestions until Sept 26.
Another public meeting in October will brief residents about federal funding Chattanooga expects to get from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the upcoming year.
Nonprofit organizations may apply for the funds to address needs in the community.
