Rains bring at least 3 tornadoes, break dry spell

JACKSON, Miss. - At least three small tornadoes were part of a rainy system that moved across Mississippi Friday night and Saturday morning.

Officials reported tornadoes in Rankin, Simpson and Smith counties. Buildings were destroyed in the Rankin and Smith county twisters

High winds also took the roof off a home in a rural area southwest of Natchez.

The weather system was accompanied by heavy rains in some parts of the state. Forecasters say an area northeast of Jackson were deluged after midnight Saturday, including a report of more than 6 inches at Goshen Springs in eastern Rankin County.

Forecasters in Memphis, Tenn., say about 4 inches of rain fell around Sardis and Batesville, the highest totals in northern Mississippi.
