ATLANTA - Gov. Nathan Deal is in Panama touring the major expansion underway of the Panama Canal and says the project there underscores the need for the Port of Savannah to deepen its shipping channel.

Deal toured the canal today and said in a phone interview that he was impressed with the scope of the work being done in Panama to make way for super-sized cargo ships.

The governor says the state is anxious to start spending its money to begin deepening the Savannah shipping channel to accommodate for the larger ships. The state is waiting on Congress to take action sometime soon to eliminate a bureaucratic hurdle.

Deal says "if it was up to Georgia, we would have been dredging a long time ago." Deal returns to Georgia on Tuesday.
