Two people were burned in a fire this afternoon at 4502 Kemp Drive in Brainerd and were taken to Erlanger Medical Center, the Chattanooga Fire Department reported.

One of the victims, described in a news release as an elderly man, was in the front yard when the first firefighters arrived.

The release said he appeared to have suffered severe burns to a large part of his body.

His wife had helped him get away from the house, but had received burns mainly on her hands, the release said.

It was also stated the man is expected to be taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control, and although the dollar estimate of the damage is unavailable, there was substantial damage to the house, the release said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
