The elderly man who was severely burned in a house fire on Kemp Drive on Tuesday has died, authorities said.

Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said Andrew Broomfield, 86, died about 2 p.m. Thursday at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.

He said Broomfield had second- and third-degree burns to about 70 percent of his body.

Broomfield's wife told authorities she had gone to church and stopped on the way home to buy food. When she got to her driveway, she saw smoke and flames coming out of the den window.

Her husband was in the living room chair with his clothes on fire, so she walked him outside and then neighbors helped get him farther away from the burning house.

Arma Broomfield was treated at Erlanger for burns to her hands and released.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
