Carroll, who recently conducted a poll, held a fundraising event and printed campaign materials, said he will not be running.
"This has not been an easy decision for me as I have worried about it, prayed about it, and discussed it in length with my family, friends, and supporters. There is no doubt that I am qualified and have the experience to be a viable candidate for the office of sheriff," Carroll said in a released statement.
Carroll said he opted not to run after a recent poll was conducted which, "indicates to me that the citizens of Hamilton County are satisfied with Sheriff [Jim] Hammond's job performance and desire to re-elect him to office."
A story in Friday's Chattanooga Times Free Press detailed which potential candidates collected funds to run for office. Carroll was among the potential candidates who have raised money. Candidates can't qualify until November.
Carroll, who retired from the Chattanooga Police Department as an assistant chief, worked for many years as a homicide detective solving high-profile cases at the department. Carroll began his career in law enforcement at the sheriff's office in 1979.
