Volkswagen of America today reported a 2.6 drop in sales last month compared to a year ago, through the Chattanooga-made Passat had its best March ever.

VW posted sales of 36,717 in March, with steady demand for its diesel-powered models, the company said.

About 41 percent of the Passat's 11,050 sales in March were TDI models.

"We continue to see steady demand for our TDI Clean Diesels as well as our core vehicles," said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America, in a statement. "With the Spring selling season upon us, we expect to see more stability ahead as we lay the groundwork for the launch of the all-new Golf coming later this summer."

Total Jetta deliveries for March were 15,692 units. VW will debut the 2015 model year Jetta at the New York International Auto Show in April. The new Jetta will feature a refreshed exterior, improved fuel economy and a host of new safety and technology features, according to VW.
