Four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods announced today that he will miss next week's tournament in Augusta after undergoing back surgery for a pinched nerve.

Woods played in his first Masters in 1996, shooting two rounds of 75 as an amateur and missing the cut. He won the event the next year, shooting an 18-under 270 and winning by 12 strokes over Tom Kite.

"Sad to say I'm missing the Masters," Woods posted on Twitter. "Thanks to the fans for so many kind wishes."
