An 80-year-old man was killed at about 5 p.m. today when his pickup truck was struck by a Norfolk Southern train at a crossing, authorities said.

The man, a Tennessee resident whose identity was not released pending notification of relatives, died when the train struck his white Chevrolet pickup truck at the crossing at the intersection of Carroll Road and U.S. Highway 11 in Dade County, Ga., Sheriff Ray Cross said.

According to witnesses, the truck was behind another vehicle and got stuck on the tracks.

The truck, struck on the passenger side, appeared to have been wrapped around the front of the train, which travelled about three-tenths of a mile before it was able to stop, the sheriff said.

The driver was the only person in the truck, according to authorities.
