Tornado watch issued in northern, central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A tornado watch is in effect for large parts of northern and central Alabama as thunderstorms roll across the state.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service say the watch will be in effect until 10 a.m.

It covers 23 Alabama counties and includes several of the state's major cities, including Birmingham, Huntsville and Florence.

A line of several thunderstorms was moving across northwest Alabama during the pre-dawn hours today, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings.

Forecasters have said that high winds will be the main threat from today's storms, but brief tornadoes are also possible.
