The Market Street Bridge in downtown Chattanooga will be closed to through traffic on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. as transportation workers conduct quarterly testing of the largest drawbridge of its type east of the Mississippi River.

Bad weather or unforeseen circumstances could lead to a rescheduling of the testing, Tennessee Department of Transportation officials said.

The 2,000-foot steel and concrete span, officially known as the Chief John Ross Bridge, opened across the Tennessee River in 1917.

The bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.
