MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Census Bureau data shows that Montgomery County's population has been dropping slightly for two years.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that data shows that births dropped in the county last year while the number of deaths rose and more people moved out than moved. Census figures show Montgomery County had about 226,660 residents in 2013, which is a roughly 1.15 decrease from 2012.

Director of Auburn University's Center for Demographic Research Yanyi Djamba says the data is surprising and the county's population grew in 2010 and 2011.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange says the decline may be linked to people moving to Lee County. According to Census data, Lee County was the third fastest growing on in Alabama last year.
