Rescue workers busy in Birmingham area getting people from flooded homes, cars

HOMEWOOD, Ala. - Rescue crews have helped people from flooded homes and cars in the Birmingham area.

About two dozen residents of a mobile home park in Pelham had to be rescued from flood waters that were nearly chest high. Others were isolated in mobile homes that were on higher ground because the only entrance into the complex was flooded.

Rescue workers also got several people and pets out of an apartment complex in Homewood, where water was up to the windows of some cars.

An employee of American Safety Tread in Pelham says a foot of water from Buck Creek filled the small foundry and workers were being sent home.

The National Weather Service says nearly 4.4 inches of rain fell at the Birmingham airport in 24 hours.
