NEW YORK - A 16-year-old boy has been indicted on a murder charge in the fire-related death of a veteran New York Police Department officer.

Prosecutors say Marcell Dockery faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Dockery has already been arraigned on assault, arson and reckless-endangerment charges. He's being held without bail.

A defense attorney said Friday officer Dennis Guerra's death was tragic but a jury would determine Dockery's culpability.

Authorities say Dockery lit a mattress on fire on the 13th floor of an apartment building last weekend. They say he did so out of boredom.

They say Guerra and his partner were overcome by carbon monoxide and smoke while responding.

Guerra died Wednesday. His partner remains in critical but stable condition.

Guerra's funeral is scheduled for Monday.
