Volkswagen Group sales rose 5.8 percent in the first quarter despite lower figures in North America and the United States.

First quarter sales jumped to 2.4 million globally on the strength of Asia and modest growth in Western Europe, the German automaker reported today.

March worldwide sales also were higher, up 7.6 percent to 929,500 vehicles.

The Asia-Pacific region accounted for sales of 978,700, or 13.7 percent higher than a year ago in the first quarter.

But, the company's sales were down 4.1 percent in the quarter in North America to 197,300. Sales were even worse in the U.S., falling to 133,500, or down 6.5 percent.

"All in all, we are very satisfied with the way deliveries developed in the first three months," said Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler in Wolfsburg today.
