TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. - Officials on Tybee Island say they saw few problems during the first of two anticipated weekends of the spring break gathering known as Orange Crush.
Mayor Jason Buelterman says crowds of partygoers Saturday and Sunday were smaller than expected, making for a typical busy April weekend at Georgia's largest public beach. Extra trashcans and volunteer litter patrols helped keep the beach clean after garbage left by previous Orange Crush crowds had residents complaining.
The Savannah Morning News reports Tybee Island Police Chief Bob Bryson reported 22 arrests over the weekend, mostly for traffic violations. Bryson says police expect bigger crowds Easter weekend, when officials expect a second wave of college-aged Orange Crush visitors to arrive.
