NASHVILLE - A Nashville woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding the Veterans Administration of more than $364,000.
The Tennessean report Birdie Anderson received a grant for $80,600 in 2007 to house homeless veterans for at least seven years. She bought a house that was later foreclosed upon and ended up housing the veterans for only about three years.
Anderson also received grants for $25,000 and $258,000 for veteran housing and transportation.
Prosecutor Hilliard Hester said Anderson used that money only to further her gambling addiction.
Anderson also falsely claimed to be the CEO of an organization within the VA. And the retired Army Reservist claimed to have spent time in covert operations in Afghanistan when she actually was a desk clerk at Fort Bragg, N.C.
