SALT LAKE CITY - A U.S. marshal shot and critically wounded a defendant today in a federal courthouse after the man rushed the witness stand with a pen at his trial in Salt Lake City, authorities said.

Defendant Siale Angilau was hospitalized with at least one chest wound, FBI spokesman Mark Dressen said.

The shooting occurred in connection with a gang-related trial, U.S. attorney's office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch said.

No other details were immediately available.

The case was being heard in U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell's courtroom.

Police were called to the downtown U.S. District Court building about 9:45 a.m., and witnesses told the Salt Lake Tribune they saw someone carried out of the courthouse on a stretcher.
