Eight area agencies and businesses are urging residents to dispose of unused prescription drugs during Saturday's 2014 drug take-back event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The effort is aimed at keeping prescription drugs out of landfills and water systems and off the streets.

Residents can drop off old prescription or over-the-counter medicines at one of the following area locations:

Blood Assurance -- 705 E. Fourth St.

East Chattanooga Improvement Inc. -- 1502 McCallie Ave.

Walgreens -- 2289 Gunbarrel Road

Walgreens -- 3605 Brainerd Road

Walgreens -- 4542 Highway 58

Hamilton County Sheriff's Department Annex -- 6233 Dayton Blvd. (9 a.m.-1 p.m.)

Sponsors for the drug take-back are Tennessee American Water Co., East Chattanooga Improvement Inc., Blood Assurance, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Walgreens Pharmacy, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, Hamilton County Coalition and the 11th Judicial District Attorney's Office.

"The drug take-back offers residents an opportunity to take a proactive approach in preserving our environment," Deron Allen, president of Tennessee American Water, said in a news release. "Even the seemingly smallest efforts of an individual can have a much larger impact on protecting both our environment and our community."
