A reported armed robbery at the KFC on East Third Street this week turned out to be a fake, Chattanooga police said.

After police arrived at the KFC shortly after noon Sunday, manager Fellen Hayes, 24, said she was standing outside the business with a deposit bag, waiting for her cousin to pick her up and take her to the bank, when a tall black man approached her with a gun. She said the man, whom she identified as "Ira," took the deposit bag and ran, according to the police affidavit.

The affidavit said the bag contained $1,300.

Police took Hayes to the Police Services Center for further questioning, police said, and she confessed that she had been a part of the plan to steal money from the KFC.

Hayes was charged with theft over $1,000 and criminal conspiracy. Bail was set at $3,500.
