NASHVILLE - Television ad spending soared above $1.4 million in Tennessee's state Supreme Court retention election in which voters kept three Democratic justices despite efforts by Republican Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey and independent groups to oust them, a nonpartisan group says.

"The amount spent attempting to influence this retention election is deeply troubling," said Alicia Bannon with the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University of Law.

Chief Justice Gary Wade and fellow justices Connie Clark and Sharon Lee all won new eight-year terms in Thursday's election.
