1 dead after pickup careens into farmers market in New Jersey

HAWTHORNE, N.J. - One person was killed and several others were injured when a pickup truck drove into a farmers market in northern New Jersey.

Authorities say the accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. Sunday in Hawthorne, but they would not immediately disclose further details.

Hawthorne Mayor Richard Goldberg told NJ.com that the pickup truck drove through a barricade, struck several people and briefly dragged a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Goldberg said two or three people hurt in the accident were being treated at hospitals, but officials said their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Goldberg said a man had been taken into custody, but did not say if the man had been driving the truck.

Vendors were preparing to close for the day when the crash occurred.
