Lee University offers courses for older folks

Registration begins Tuesday for Lee University's annual fall Encore program.

Courses are designed for people aged 60 and older, a university news release states. A new line-up of mini-courses has been added for spring. Registration fee of $25 includes two courses.

In-office registration begins Tuesday. Encore office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Fast track registration is 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 21 and Aug. 25 in the Centenary Room in the Higginbotham Administration Building. All courses are first-come, first-served and spaces are limited. Offered for fall are:

• The History of Baseball -- Students will learn about the game using the Ken Burns video series and will travel to the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The course is led by Dr. David Altopp and will meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Sept. 2-Oct. 6. There will be an additional cost for the trip.

• German Language and Culture -- An introduction to reading, writing and speaking German and discussions of German culture. The course is set for Wednesday afternoons, Sept. 3-Oct. 22, and will be taught by Dayne Frost, an adjunct professor of music.

• Spanish Language & Culture for Travelers I -- Intended for travelers to Spanish-speaking countries and taught by Dr. Alexander Steffanell, assistant professor of Spanish. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Sept. 2-25.

• Spanish Language & Culture for Travelers III -- Continuation of the Spanish Language & Culture for Travelers II offered in spring 2014. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Oct. 7-Nov. 4.

• The Teachings of Jesus with emphasis on the Sermon on the Mount -- Dr. Henry J. Smith, an adjunct professor in Christian ministries will delve into the teaching ministry of Jesus and focus on the ethical and moral teachings found in chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew. Monday evenings, Oct. 13-Nov. 3.

• Learning from the Great Revivals -- Dr. Jerald Daffe, professor of pastoral studies, will guide students to explore historic revivalism, including biblical revivals and 18th- and 19th-century revivals. Thursday evenings, Sept. 4-Oct. 2.

• Class Guitar for Beginners -- Monday afternoons, Sept. 8-Oct. 13.

• Art Connections -- For all skill levels, focusing on two-dimensional media ranging from watercolor to printmaking to oils. Friday evenings, Sept. 26-Oct. 31.

• The iHows in the iWorld: A Guide to the iPhone and iPad -- Covers the basics of navigation, settings, email, Facetime, messaging and taking pictures and videos. Tuesday evenings, Sept. 2-Oct. 7.

• Computers for Beginners -- For computer novices. Tuesday evenings, Sept. 2-Oct. 7. Computers for Beginners II, Tuesday evenings, Oct. 14-Nov. 11.

• Office for Beginners -- Introduction to Microsoft Word and Excel and their applications. Tuesday afternoons, Sept. 2-Oct. 7. Office for Advanced Beginners, Tuesday mornings Oct. 14-Nov. 11.

• Introduction to Fitness -- A 10-week course that offers a variety of fitness concepts including low-impact aerobics, ballroom dancing, cardio machines, weight machines, walking, hiking, senior Zumba, and stretch band workout. Wednesday afternoons, Sept. 3-Nov. 5.

• Encore Joint Conditioning Class -- A 10-week course to help students strengthen and regain movement in their joints, with stretches and breathing techniques for relaxation and flexibility. Students will need to wear the proper attire. Wednesday afternoons, Sept. 3-Nov. 5.

• Myths and Legends of the Old West -- Explore the myths and realities surrounding some of the most famous -- and infamous -- people in the history of the Old West. Tuesday afternoons, Sept. 2-Sept. 30.
