A man who became ill in the Pocket Wilderness near Soddy-Daisy had to be rescued Saturday morning, authorities said.

The Mowbray Volunteer Fire Department responded when the 21-year-old called 911 about 8 a.m., according to Hamilton County Emergency Services spokeswoman Amy Maxwell.

He was about four miles back on the trail and said he'd been there since Friday night. He did not have enough water and food to replenish his body and said that he began to experience signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and fatigue, Maxwell said.

All told, 40 first responders participated in the seven-hour rescue.

The man was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
