A 34-year-old lifelong resident of Calhoun, Tenn., died in a car crash early Monday morning, according to an accident report from Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Adam Melton, 34, was killed in the accident in Bradley County. The driver of the second vehicle involved in the accident, James Lowe Jr., 47 of Tracy City, was not injured.

The accident occurred when Melton's car was traveling northbound on Interstate 75 near mile marker 31 at a high rate of speed, according to the report. Melton's car rear-ended Lowe's car, resulting in Melton's death.

The officer noted in the report that Melton had not been wearing a seatbelt, and the officer suspected Melton had been drinking and using drugs, although test results are pending.

A citation was issued to Lowe, but no criminal charges will be filed. He was not suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and he was wearing a seatbelt.
