A woman shot a man to death in a bedroom at 2411 Stuart Street and then tried to burn the house down around 11:55 p.m. Sunday, according to Chattanooga police.

Amy Bates, 29, has been charged with criminal homicide and is being held in the Hamilton County Jail on a $1.5 million bond. The victim, a white male, was found dead at the foot of the bed with a gunshot wound to the head.

Two other adults were in the house when the man was killed, according to the affidavit. One witness told police that she heard three gunshots while laying in bed, and then Bates came into the room and said, "We got to get out of here."

Bates then allegedly set fire to the bedroom where she shot the man.

A second witness told police that he did not hear the gunshots but instead awoke to the first witness, his girlfriend, telling him that Bates had shot the victim.

The second witness realized the front bedroom was on fire and used three buckets of water to put it out, he told police. Bates then ran out the door and the second witness called 911.

Police found Bates about three blocks away and took her in for questioning. She has also been charged with aggravated arson, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.
