Chattanoogans are getting an early Christmas present with the price of gas below $2 a gallon at a trio of service stations in Brainerd.

Gas prices dropped today to $1.96 a gallon at the Sam's Club on Lee Highway and $1.99 a gallon at the nearby Murphy Express and Murphy USA stations, according to GasBuddy.com. Gas prices are now at their lowest level in more than five years in Chattanooga.

Among all service stations, Chattanooga gas prices, on average, fell Wednesday another 2 cents to $2.25 a gallon, according to a survey by AAA. Today's average price is down 29 cents a gallon from a month ago and 82 cents a gallon below the price at the pump a year ago.

Chattanooga gas prices average 25 cents a gallon less than the U.S. average, AAA surveys show.
